Historical note:

The Ann Eliza Club was founded in 1885. Judge George Moulton Carpenter (1844-1896) was the founding president. Membership was exclusively male, and consisted mostly of artists, art critics and art collectors. In April of 1888, the club rented a downtown room at 35 Westminster Street, where it remained for many years. It was initially a very informal group of friends, with but one unofficial rule: "everyone who comes into this room either as a member or as a guest is required to do just as he pleases." A later set of "Rules of Behavior" offered suggestions such as "If you inadvertently get a spot on the table-cloth, absent-mindedly place a piece of bread over it, butter side down. The butter will keep the bread from slipping off the spot." Meetings generally centered around the reading of papers, mostly connected at least loosely to artistic themes. Members also shared their art work, and many pieces were displayed in the club room. A club member served as appointed chef (initially Charles W. Stetson, later Arba D. Smith), and served generous portions at each meeting. As one early member later described, "It was not easy work to read a paper. Interruption and heckling sometimes made it almost impossible. On one occasion when Robert Brown persisted in spite of all opposition Charlie Mumford, who sat beside him, lighted a match and applied it to the lower corner of his manuscript." The club is still in existence as of 2010 and holding meetings at the Providence Art Club.

Scope and content:

The bulk of this collection consists of four boxes of lectures given at the club from 1885 to 1934. These appear to be nearly complete from 1885 through 1898, while the later years are much more scattered. Accompanying these transcriptions is a complete list of lectures given through 1898, with a notation if the lecture was not written or not donated to the club. The lectures vary widely in content, but for the most part aimed either to amuse the club members, or educate them through a serious discussion of contemporary artists and art theory. In many cases, the manuscript lectures were bound together with members' poetry and short satirical pieces in conjunction with the club's annual dinners, or in the form of a manuscript periodical called The Dredge. At least 98% of the lectures that have been preserved were presented by club members. The only surviving pre-1896 lectures from non-members were #225 (“William Dean Howells as a Novelist,” by A.E. Thomas); #226. (“Richard Harding Davis and Mary E. Wilkins,” by Thomas Crosby Jr.); and #276 (“A Forgotten Rhode Island Poet,” by Rev. Richard Eddy).

The mostly widely known lecture in this series is probably “The Artist and His Critics,” by the noteworthy African-American artist Edward Mitchel Bannister, given on April 15, 1886. Also of interest are several lectures given by Charles W. Stetson from 1886 to 1891, and one lecture about him dated 1895. Stetson was best known for his marriage to pioneering feminist lecturer and author Charlotte Perkins Gilman, who he was in the process of divorcing at that time. The collection also includes seven letters from Stetson, dated 1892 to 1894

Another interesting lecture by Gustine L. Hurd, dated 1889 and titled "A.D. 2000", imagines life in the twenty-first century after emerging from a state of suspended animation. Hurd finds that the population of Providence has grown to 850,000, the city is lighted by night from four central towers, travel is primarily done by balloon, and a gladiator coliseum had been constructed at Roger Williams Park. He is told by a gladiator that "you belong to the old effeminate era, when a game of base-ball took your breath away. The race has improved, and today we have some red blood in us." However, in the Ann Eliza spirit, most of Hurd's predictions took the form of poking fun at club members.

In addition to lectures and other compositions, the collection also includes complete minute books from 1885 to 1925; membership records; planning files from annual dinners; treasurer's reports; and four folders of correspondence.

The following were the members who were active between 1885 and 1894. They are generally well documented in the membership records, minutes and lectures. The names are followed by their membership numbers; members with no biographical sheet are indicated by an asterisk.
