Ordering Images

The Rights & Reproductions Division provides services for all of the Rhode Island Historical Society collections: Graphic, Printed, Manuscript and Museum.  Reproductions of the collections can only be obtained through the Rights & Reproductions Division.  Unauthorized reproductions taken from printed or electronic materials are strictly prohibited.  All requests for reproductions are subject to approval by the Rhode Island Historical Society.  The Rhode Island Historical Society reserves the right to refuse to reproduce any materials that may be damaged by the reproduction process or that are restricted by copyright laws.   

Please fill out the Rights & Reproductions Application Form (pdf) completely and submit it by mail or fax.  Incomplete forms will be returned.  Rights & Reproductions staff cannot provide photographic research or select material from the collections.  If you are unable to download the PDF version of the application form, please contact Rights & Reproductions to request a copy be mailed or faxed to you.

Service fees apply for the use of all images of the Rhode Island Historical Society collections.  Fees are based on the cost to create the reproduction, the type of publication use and the overhead cost to maintain Rights & Reproductions services.  The Rhode Island Historical Society does not waive fees or offer discounts.

Permission to Reproduce Images

All researchers must request permission to publish or use images of the Rhode Island Historical Society collections.   The Rhode Island Historical Society offers a one-time non-exclusive License Agreement for use of its collections’ images for one format type (book, periodical, thesis, etc.); subsequent formats and editions are subject to additional License Agreements.

Please fill out the Rights & Reproductions Application Form completely and submit it by mail or fax.

All fees must be paid before a License Agreement is issued and the images are released for the licensed publication/project.

Permission to Quote from RIHS Collections

Please fill out the Permission to Quote Application Form completely and submit it to Rights & Reproductions by mail or fax.  Please fill out one form per Manuscript Collection being cited or quoted from.  The Rhode Island Historical Society cannot provide permission to publish a quote or citation without a completed application form.  Incomplete forms will delay your request and may be returned to you for completion.  If you are unable to download the PDF version of the application form, please contact Rights & Reproductions to request a copy be mailed or faxed to you.
